Have you audited your life?

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” Socrates

My favourite quotes these days, highlighting the importance of introspection and self-awareness in pursuit of life. As we hustle and bustle through twists and turns of everyday, which almost feels like an unscripted Bollywood or Hollywood movie – full of drama, emotion, and unexpected plot spirals. Amidst this, it is so much needed to pause, reflect, and realign ourselves with our core values and aspirations. That’s why I highly advocate for auditing your life. It is less about examining where you are and more about realigning with the person you want to be. It is a chance to adjust your inner compass through the chaos and focus on what truly matters.

If you are a professional auditor, you know where to begin. If not try these simple steps to find or create a little calm away from the noise of life.

Understand your scope – what truly matters. Life sometimes is about paying your bills, but not always! Deadlines to meet, people to please, flights to take, sleep to give-up, and expectations to fulfill. But beneath all of that, what do you truly value? What makes your heart feel alive? Take a quiet moment and ask yourself: What lights me up? When do I feel tears of joy? When am I most at peace? Am I living in alignment with what I believe in?

Write it down. Be honest. These values are anchors that will guide everything else.

Share planning coffee with yourself. Imagine sharing coffee with a dear friend. You are non-judgemental. You listen. You shed a tear. You laugh. Now imagine your life as your best friend. Ask questions – Are you treating your body and mind with compassion? Are you surrounded by love, support, and connection? Does your work give you meaning, or is it draining your spirit? Are you building the security and freedom you dream of? Are you challenging yourself and embracing curiosity? Are you carving out space for laughter, play, and moments that make your soul sing? The most powerful one- where will all this take you, three months from now?

Rate each area, not to judge, but to see where the cracks might be. Self-awareness is the first step toward change.

Sieve out right and not so right. It is easy to focus on what is wrong, but don’t forget to celebrate what is right. What are you proud of? What is going well? Honor those things. At the same time, take a loving look at what is not serving you anymore. Old habits, toxic relationships, self-doubt…

What can you release or let go to make room for growth?

Test and savour daydreams. What would your life book look like if it read perfect to you? Don’t be afraid to daydream. Go big and cut into bite size pieces or meaningful steps. Maybe it is waking up 10 minutes earlier to meditate. Maybe it is scheduling a call with your therapist. Maybe it is signing up for that online class to learn guitar. Or a cold fan call to someone you admire.

Tiny steps create momentum, and momentum creates transformation.

Analyse what is taking space. Make room. Growth cannot happen when we are overwhelmed.  What is cluttering your mind, your schedule, or your heart? I was asked – what is stopping you from healing. So provoking! Let it go. Say no to what drains or stops you. Say yes to what excites you.

Simplify where you can. Growth needs room to breathe.

Grace and celebrate. You are doing the work. You are showing up for yourself. That is worth celebrating. Show grace to yourself. Write the positive outcome in a journal or notes. Do celebrate – be it is a quiet cup of tea after a long day or a spa. Find ways to honor your progress. You deserve it.

Write a love letter to yourself. A life audit is not something you do once and forget. It is an ongoing practice – develop a habit of writing a love letter to the person you are becoming. Every few months, sit down with yourself again. Reflect. Adjust. Grow. Life will keep changing, and so will you. The beauty lies in staying connected to who you are through it all.

The ongoing journey. Your life is your own curated, crafted and colored piece of art. It is messy, beautiful, imperfect, and entirely yours. Auditing life is not about creating perfection; it is about living with intention. It is about choosing to show up for yourself, even when it is hard. So go ahead, take that first step. Your best self is waiting.

*I am grateful to close friends, family, well-wishers, mentors and even strangers who have helped me audit my life. Sometimes announced and many a times unexpected, the process has been reflective and transformative. With wisdom I have gained, I share my experiences and learnings with you. Do share with others the golden nuggets you find.

  1. So beautiful Neetu ❤️
We all go through our journey of life thinking we are the only ones having ups and downs- never knowing the storm going on in the lives of others around us. Moments with oneself and being surrounded by people who love and care is the most ignored part in our ‘busy’ lives. And we realise this truth many times when the going gets tough and then forget and go back to our own old ways! Thanks for reminding the things which should always remain important in our lives!🤗

    • True! When we flow with life we attract to only flow away. Pause time helps us attract good things and beautiful people. Maybe that’s why we are reminded through the ups and downs of life – what to embrace more and what to let go. You have held me in the most difficult times, like a blessing. Hugs.
